Prevention of Recreational
Water-Related Illnesses
Many of you have asked about our policy regarding the prevention of water-related
illnesses. It is as follows:
Anyone (Adult or Child) with a stomach disorder or diarrhea within the
last 24 hours must not go swimming. Anyone having had diarrhea within
the previous two weeks is also urged not to use the pool.
Many dangerous water-related illnesses have been spread by both
adults and children alike. Proper hygiene is important for all.
Help prevent unnecessary pool closings by showering with soap before
swimming, and practicing proper hand-washing after toilet use (warm
water and soap).
Children under age three (3) or those not toilet-trained must wear
plastic pants with sealed legs or a comparable quality "swim
diaper". Please use diaper changing stations in bathrooms for
diaper changes-no poolside diaper changes are permitted. Hand washing
after all changes is a must!
Encourage children to avoid drinking pool water, and encourage
young children to make frequent visits to the bathroom.
We may be required to close the pool for at least 2 hours and up to 24
hours if a health hazard exists (e.g. contaminated water, high bacteria
counts).
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) information on Recreational Water-Related
Illnesses (RWI's) may be found at the
CDC healthy swimming website, or ask our office or guard staff for
the CDC handout.
